A deaeration member (128) for an ink jet head comprises a tubular member made of air-permeable, ink-impermeable material and adapted to be inserted into an ink passage in an ink jet head. One end of the tubular member (128) is sealed and the other end of the tubular member being connectable to a source (132) of subatmospheric pressure. The member (128) may be inserted into a carbon pressure plate (102) of a piezoelectric ink jet head. <IMAGE>
