[Also in Division C7] The catalyst used in the preparation of polyesters from an aromatic and/or an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or derivative thereof and an aliphatic and/or a cyclic dihydric alcohol comprises (a) antimony, (b) lead and (c) one or more alkaline earth metals or magnesium, in the form of metals, alloy or alloys, compounds (e.g. oxides, hydroxides, glycolates, acetates or fumarates) or combinations of these. The metals or alloys may be pulverized to a grain size of up to 200 Á. Specified acids are terephthalic, isophthalic, 5-sulfo-isophthalic, 2,6- naphthalenedicarboxylic, diphenyl dicarboxylic, diphenylsulphone dicarboxylic, adipic and sebacic. Specified diols are ethylene glycol, 1,4 - butanediol, 1,4 - bis - [hydroxymethyl]- cyclohexane and bisphenol-A-diglycol ether. Small amounts of cross-linking agents, e.g. 2,5- dihydroxyterephthalic acid, may also be present. The examples describe the formation of polyesters from (1) to (20) dimethyl terephthalate (D.M.T.) and ethylene glycol (E.G.); (21) D.M.T., E.G. and Bisphenol-A-diglycol ether; (22) D.M.T., E.G., bisphenol-A-diglycol ether and pentaerythritol,(23) and (24) D.M.T. and 1,4-bis- [hydroxymethyl]-cyclohexane. Uses.-Films, fibres and moulded articles.</p> |
