The invention relates to a process for preparing 3-methylpyridine, employed both as a solvent and as an intermediate product in the process of manufacturing nicotinic acid. According to the invention, the process consists in making the 2-methyl-1,5-diaminopentane in gaseous phase flow at a temperature of 300...400 degree C and a pressure of 0...10 bars, without ammonia admixture, over a catalyst selected from activated Al2O3, a mixture of aluminium and silicon oxide or a natural or synthetic zeolite, exhibiting a ratio between the acid active centers and the basic active centers on the surface higher than 2 and a specific surface larger than 40 m2/g, thereby obtaining 3-methylpiperidine which is then dehydrogenated to 3-methylpyridine during a subsequent step.
