PURPOSE: Provided are beta-substituted-gamma-butyrolactone and a process for economically preparing it in high yield and purity by crystallization or re-crystallization method. CONSTITUTION: The beta-substituted-gamma-butyrolactone represented by the formula(I) is characteristically prepared by reducing beta-substituted-succinic anhydride represented by the formula(2) to zinc borohydride in the presence of conventional organic solvents. In the formulae, R1 is hydrogen atom, acetyl group, benzyl benzoyl, 2- or 4-nitrophenylcarbonyl, 2- or 4-chlorophenylcarbonyl, 2- or 4-bromophenylcarbonyl, and 1- or 2-naphthylcarbonyl group.
