PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for compensating picture quality for projection video display equipment, with which a picture quality can be prevented from being lowered by compensating the picture quality into state optimal for improvement regardless of a picture quality influence factor. SOLUTION: Projection video display equipment is provided with a screen for displaying video projected from the outside, video processing part for converting an inputted analog video signal to a digital signal and processing it by gain control so that a picture can be displayed, sensing part for sensing the video signal outputted from the video processing part to be projected on the prescribed area of the screen, memory part for storing reference video information, and microcomputer for calculating the luminance and chromaticity values of video from the output of the sensing part so that the reference video information stored in the memory part can be projected through the video processing part onto the screen by the picture quality compensating instruction of a user or set algorithm, comparing the values with set values and controlling the video processing part to perform the compensation corresponding to the compared result.
