A monitoring apparatus includes an attachment unit AU1 to be attached to an article using double-sided adhesive tape 1, a switch in the attachment unit being opened or closed by movement of the actuator 31 to indicate, by triggering of an alarm, whether the unit is adjacent the article to be protected. To defeat holding of the switch closed by a thin card slipped between the article and the unit, the unit includes conductive elements 41, 42 electrically connected by a conductive film 6 arranged on the contacting surface of the unit opposite the article surface, although the contacts are not adhered to the film. A card slipped between the facing article and unit surfaces will break the connection between the contacts that is provided by the film to cause the actuation of the alarm.
