PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a camera for paintings and calligraphic works, by which proper adjustment of magnification is attained corresponding to various size of originals without a troublesome operation and the power consumption is reduced. SOLUTION: The camera 201 for paintings and calligraphic works is provided with a subject detecting means to detect presence/absence of a subject or presence/absence of a motion of the subject, a transmitting means to transmit a control instruction according to a detected result to a video display device and an image pickup range switching means to switch image pickup ranges corresponding to the size of the subject, fixes the image pickup range when the presence/absence of the subject or the presence/absence of the motion of the subject is detected, switches the image pickup ranges corresponding to the various size of the originals and adjusts enlarg rate.
