PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus by which productivity can be maintained. SOLUTION: A primary memory 14 to store image information acquired by IIT 12 and before being encoded by an encoder 24 is provided and when memory overflow is caused in a secondary memory 26 since the compression rate is low in the case of encoding the image information by the encoder 24, the image information is retransferred from the primary memory 14. Selectors 36A, 36B to selectively switch a route to transfer the image information from the primary memory 14 to an image processor 20, an IOT 16 via an electronic sort function module 34 and a route ('direct transfer route' hereafter) to directly transfer the image information from the primary memory 14 to the image processor 20, the IOT 16 without interposing the electronic sort function module 34 are provided, when only a part of the image information is outputted and when the electronic sort function is unusable, the direct transfer route is selected.
