PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for driving an MFIT CCD element for high-definition television capable of switching progressive scanning and interlaced scanning without increasing the scale of a device. SOLUTION: In the method for driving an image pickup device in which conversion elements to convert an optical signal into signal electric charges are arranged in the line direction and the column direction, to divide the signal electric charges into the signal electric charges obtained by the conversion elements on odd-numbered lines and the signal electric charge obtained by the conversion elements on even- numbered lines and to output them by a unit frame, a process to progressively output the signal electric charges by every line obtained by the conversion elements on the odd-numbered lines from a common output line in the column direction with a preset cycle after elapse of first prescribed blanking period from start of the unit frame and a process to progressively output the signal electric charges by every line obtained by the conversion elements on the even-numbered lines from the common output line in the column direction with the cycle after elapse of second prescribed blanking period from completion of output of the signal electric charges obtained by the conversion elements on the odd-numbered line are integrated and defined as the unit frame of the progressive scanning.
