PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To carry out operations of positional correction and skew correction automatically for an manuscript read image, and obtain an image with a small variation by making the correction process highly accurate. SOLUTION: In black reference detecting units 12a, 12b, and 12c, a plurality of black references out of a manuscript reading region are read through an optical scanning means used for reading the manuscript image. A means for compensating the output position and the skew of the read image on the basis of the read black references is provided in the image reading apparatus. The compensating means detects a plurality of times at the black reference detecting units 12a, 12b, and 12c, and a mean value of the detected values from the detecting units is used as the black reference detected value.
