PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader that can improve image read efficiency. SOLUTION: A line camera can select a thin-out mode for outputting image data merely from a pixel having specific intervals, or a synthetic mode for synthesizing image data of a plurality of adjacent pixels for outputting as the image data of one pixel according to the required resolution of a target image, thus shortening image read time. In the line camera, a pixel selection section 11 that can independently control image data output from each sample hold section 24 is connected to a line sensor 12 where an output mode-changing section 22 for changing output from two adjacent pixels to each pixel comprising a light receiving cell 20 for carrying out photoelectric conversion, a shift gate 21, and a sample hold section 24 for accumulating charge is combined with a mixing section 23 for synthesizing data of two pixels.
