PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a gradation display method; realizing number of gradations which cannot be displayed due to the limitation of a response speed, and enabling time division drive. SOLUTION: In the gradation display method of an image display device provided with at least a spatial light modulation element (LV, hereafter) and a light source illuminating it, a light source modulation means modulating the light source is provided and the respective pixels of the LV constituting one unit for performing gradation by a plurality of the pixels are turned ON/ OFF individually. Also, a frame for displaying the gradation is divided into a plurality of sub frames and the ratio of the brightness of irradiation light is almost a power of two among at least two or more sub frames constituting the same frame. Or, each sub frame is provided with at least a period TR during which the pixel changes a state and the periods 1, 2, 3 and 4, during which the pixel is in a normal state, after state change and the light source is put out during the period of the state change of the pixel and is turned on during the period of the normal state.
