The sheets (1,2) are clamped with the edge of one sheet beyond the welding zone. The welding device (3) is passed over the sheets, which are bent so they separate to allow gases to escape. The sheets are bent by a wheel (10) with one rim (11) running near the edge of the upper sheet, and a second rim (12) of larger diameter running on the lower sheet, clear of the edge of the upper sheet.
