PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a phrase string converting device suitable for more appropriately retrieving a literature database by using the pattern of paraphrase expression. SOLUTION: The phrase string input reception part 202 of a phrase string converting device 201 receives the input of a phrase string. A pattern rule storage part 203 previously stores a paraphrase pattern and paraphrase rule corresponding to it. A collation part 204 collates the inputted phrase string with the stored paraphrase pattern. A converting part 205 converts a part of or whole phrase string by paraphrase rule which is stored in accordance with the paraphrase pattern when the paraphrase pattern is matched with the paraphrase pattern stored in a part of or whole collated phrase string. An output part 206 outputs the phrase string of a converted result.
