PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently prevent degradation of image quality due to increase of defects of pixels over aging by preventing generation of duplication with detected pixels already registered in the case of detection of new defects. SOLUTION: An image pickup signal obtained by test image pickup is stored in a digital process 108. In the digital process 108, a 'defect compensation processing for detection' is first performed under control of a defect compensation control part 112d. The 'defect compensation processing for detection' is performed for the purpose of excluding a defective pixel registered as initial defect data from a detecting object of a defect detecting operation and an interpolation processing by the closest pixels with the same color is performed based on the initial defect data. And the defect detecting operation to select a pixel with large dark output level as the defective pixel is carried out by analyzing image information after compensating the defect based on the initial defect data by the digital process 108.
