Two thin metal plates (4, 5) cover the entire area of the sandwich structure (1) and have a weldable area (8). A plastic core layer (7) with low electrical conductivity is located between the two metal plates and is cut away leaving the opposing metal plates free to be welded together. An Independent claim is also made for a manufacturing process for the sandwich component in which upper (5) and lower (4) cover plates and a plastic core are cut to size, placed on top of each other and joined together.
