Device comprises a measurement tape (2) and a housing (1) that can be moved along the measurement band to measure a distance. The inventive device has photo-diodes for measuring markings on the measurement tape and or rotation of the tape roller (4). An LCD display is incorporated. An Independent claim is made for a method for measuring body dimensions or distances in which a housing is moved along a measurement tape and at the end of the movement the measured distance is indicated.
