1280276 Easy-opening can ends CONTINENTAL CAN CO Inc 4 Dec 1970 [4 Dec 1969] 57819/70 Heading B8D A fully-opening metal can end 12 comprises a removable panel 18 defined by a score-line 17, which is rupturable by a pull tab 21 riveted to the panel, a synthetic resin coating 24 applied to a face of the can end so as to define a strip 26 of bare metal spanning the score line, and a flexible vinyl plastisol band 22, which extends over and is non-adherent to the strip and which is adhered to one of the edges of the coating defining the strip and abuts the other edge of the coating whereby on removal of the panel 18, the band remains adhered to the coating and projects protectively beyond the formed raw metal edge. As shown, the band is provided on the underside of the can end and remains attached to the can end portion remaining after removal of the panel 18, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a similar coating 24a and band 30 is provided on the upper side of the can end, the band remaining attached to the separated panel 18 so that a consumer is guarded from both the raw edges formed on removal of the panel. In some circumstances, a band is only provided on the upper side of the can end to shield the edge of the panel 18 on removal thereof. The band is applied by spin lining, and typical examples of suitable vinyl-based plastisols are given. The coating 24 may be a gravure coating applied to aluminium or steel sheet from which the can end is formed, suitable resins being specified. |
