Gripping and lifting device (1) used especially for lifting pipes comprises gripping devices (3) arranged like tongs for surrounding the object to be lifted, locking devices (21) for locking the gripping devices in the closed state, and lifting devices (2) for lifting the gripping devices and the object. A switching device (12) arranged between the lifting devices and the gripping devices and acting on the locking devices has two stable switching states (locked/unlocked). The switching device switches between the two states on freeing and loading the lifting devices when the object is supported on the gripping devices. Preferred Features: The gripping devices comprise gripping fingers (6, 8) hinged onto two holding arms (5, 7). The gripping fingers have closing levers (9) supporting the gripping and lifting device on the object. The closing levers are hinged onto the gripping fingers and the angle of the closing levers can be adjusted.
