The invention relates to a method for replacing an active identification data element (EDI) on a portable identification device (DIP), said DIP having at least a first EDI with states initially active and valid and a second EDI with states initially inactive and valid. All those EDIs with a valid state on the DIP are for identification and for application of the transaction data to an account associated with the DIP, but not located on the DIP. The EDI with an active state on the DIP is used to perform a transaction, by the following method steps: a) changing the state of the first EDI from valid to invalid and from active to inactive and b) changing the state of said second EDI from inactive to active.
