It is intended to clarify a factor controlling the interaction between AGE, which occurs <i>in vivo</i> in association with diabetes or aging, and its receptor to thereby contribute to research and development on various biological activities, physiological phenomena and diseases in which AGE and RAGE participate. There are a plural number of molecular species of RAGE and soluble RAGE among them exerts an activity of controlling the interaction between AGE and transmembrane RAGE. Use of this soluble RAGE, a nucleic acid encoding the same, etc. enables non only assay of the soluble RAGE, but also studies on various physiological phenomena, biological activities and diseases in which AGE and RAGE participate and, moreover, research and development on useful drugs.
