A conjugate comprising an N-terminal fragment of hepatocyte growth factor (HGF/SF) consisting of the hairpin domain and the four kringle regions of th e .alpha.-chain and a polyethylene glycol group having an overall molecular weight of from about 20 to 40 kDA, has improved properties is a useful therapeutic agent for tumor treatment.
