PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for recording/reproducing video signals using a general video tape recorder are provided to store analog video signals for a long time using a general video tape recorder and to cope with fault of a hard disc drive by preparing a plurality of hard disc drives. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for recording/reproducing video signals for a long time includes a digital storage unit(48), a digital recording/reproduction controller, and a video tape recorder(46). The digital storage unit is used for recording data in a digital recording medium and reproducing the data from the recording medium. The digital recording/reproduction controller converts an analog video signal into a digital video signal, samples the digital video signal, records the sampled video data in the digital storage unit, reads a predetermined amount of video data when video data more than a predetermined quantity is recorded in the storage unit, and converts the read data into an analog video signal. The video tape recorder records the analog video signal on a magnetic tape and reproduces the video signal recorded on the magnetic tape.
