Purification of wide-cut cresylic acid mixtures contaminated with neutral oils and/or tar bases by extractive distillation with high-boiling solvent, the impure mixture is fed into the extractive distillation column as two separate streams, i.e. a higher-boiling fraction (A) and a low-boiling fraction (B) which is fed in at a point below (A). A method for the purification of cresylic acid mixtures (I) consisting of a phenol-containing wide cut contaminated with neutral oils and/or tar bases (II) by extractive distillation using a high-boiling solvent, taking off (II) from the top of the column, separating the solvent from the purified (I) by distillation and returning it to the extractive distillation column (EDC). In this method, a high-boiling fraction (A) and a low-boiling fraction (B) of impure (I) are fed into the EDC as separate streams, fraction (B) being fed in at a point below fraction (A).
