Fuel element and gas-cooled nuclear reactor using this type of fuel elements. A fuel element (10) designed for use in a gas- cooled nuclear reactor comprises an assembly of adjacent fuel plates (12a, 12b), cooperating together to define flow channels (14) for the gas coolant. The fuel plates (12a, 12b) are composed of elementary fissile particles, preferably uncoated, embedded in a metallic matrix. A metallic coating may be applied to the two faces of each plate (12a, 12b).
