The electronic control system calculates the operating condition of the engine from the detected engine revs and the detected combustion pressure in one of the engine cylinders, used together with the combustion pressure signal for calculating the combustion fluctuation rate. The combustion fluctuation rate signal is compared with a standard value, for determining an optimum fuel/air ratio signal. A sensor (15) in the exhaust line (8) from the engine provides a signal representing the nitrous oxide conc., compared with a stored value to provide a second optimum fuel/air ratio signal, with the fuel injection control processor (22) responding to both fuel/air ratio signals, to provide smooth running of the engine in each operating condition.
