The adhesive behaviour of unvulcanized elastomers of R.S.V. at least 1.2 and based on copolymers of ethylene, at least one α-olefin and optionally at least one multiene or mixtures thereof with fillers, plasticizers, rubber assistants or vulcanizing ingredients, is improved by adding 0.1 to 30 parts by weight per 100 parts of elastomer of a low molecular weight copolymer of ethylene, at least one α-olefin and optionally at least one multiene which has a R.S.V. in the range 0.2 to 1.3. Specified olefins are propylene and butene, and specified multienes are dicyclopentadiene, cyclooctadiene-1,5, hexadiene-1,4, methyltetrahydroindene, butenyl norbornene, pentenyl norbornene and methylene norbornene. The compositions may also comprise conventional tackifiers, e.g. aldehyde, and acetylene-phenol condensates. Other specified components are carbon black, silica, diatomaceous earth, chalk, mineral oils, zinc oxide and stearic acid. Examples describe the preparation of (1 and 2) ethylene/ propylene/methylbutenyl norbornene, (3) ethylene/butene/dicyclopentadiene and (4) ethylene/butylene/methylbutenyl norbornene copolymers in the presence of hydrogen, diethyl aluminium chloride and vanadium acetylacetonate; and (5) ethylene/butylene/methyl butenylnorbornene copolymers in the presence of hydrogen, ethyl aluminium sesquichloride and ethyl vanadate; and the compounding thereof with ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene elastomers. |
