The invention comprises water-soluble anthraquinone dyestuffs of the general formula wherein X is a direct linkage or -CH 2 -, -CH 2 CH 2 -, -NH- or -N(Alkyl)-, n is 0 or 1 and benzene ring A may be further substituted. They are prepared by (a) reacting a 1- amino - 2 - sulphonic - 4 - bromoanthraquinone with a compound of the formula where X and A are as above at 20-100‹ C. at pH 7-11 in presence of an acid binding agent, optionally in presence of a catalyst and an organic solvent; or (b) by phosphorylating the corresponding #-hydroxyethyl anthraquinone preferably at 50-150‹ C. in an inert solvent or diluent preferably using an excess of phosphorylating agent e.g. phosphoric, pyrophosphoric, metaphosphoric, polyphosphoric, alkyl esters or acid alkyl esters of dehydrated phosphoric acid or mixtures thereof with phosphorus pentoxide or phosphorus oxychloride. The dyes give blue shades on wool, silk, polyamides and natural and regenerated cotton.
