The steering gear for a ship has a reservoir (10) for hydraulic oil, a feed pump and at least one control valve. The pump has an electric motor supplied by a frequency converter and the pump provides two different feed directions for the hydraulic oil. Two hydraulic cylinders (6,7) are used for positioning of the ship's rudder (1).
