High pressure gas discharge lamp (1) comprises a bulb (2) having throat regions and a vacuum-tight quartz glass discharge vessel (5); electrodes (3, 4) protruding into the discharge vessel; and a filling arranged in the discharge vessel. The discharge vessel encloses a discharge chamber (6) having a width B of less than 4 mm and a length C of less than 8 mm. The filling is made from NaI, ScI3, Xe and ZnI2, and no Hg. Preferred Features: The electrodes are made from tungsten wire. The discharge chamber has a volume of 0.025-0.03 cm<3>. The filling contains 200-220 mu g NaI, 80-100 mu g ScI3, Xe with a filling of approximately 6 bar at room temperature, and 50-200 mu g ZnI2. The lamp has a power of 35-40 W and requires a current of 0.8-1.0 A.
