In a process to undertake a three-dimensional study of ground pollutants, measurements are made of the vertical and horizontal temperature profiles using a dense network of sensors. The boundaries between polluted soil and non-polluted soil, or different chemical or biological activity, is determined by sudden temperature differences. The temperature information is registered and fed by wire to a computer with am appropriate evaluation program. The data is transmitted continually or intermittently. The temperature sensors are incorporated within a lance or rail which is rammed into the ground or inserted in pre-drilled holes. The sensors on the array of lances or rails is linked to the computer by telephone wires. The array further monitors changes in ground water temperature.
