The arrangement has a variable valve actuator and a computer unit computes a reference inlet pipe pressure and a reference fresh air ratio corresponding to a reference operating condition of the actuation arrangement based on a detected internal combustion engine operating condition. A fresh air ratio correction value is derived from detected and reference inlet pipe pressures and used to compute an engine control object operating parameter. The arrangement has a variable valve actuator that varies the actuation characteristic of at least one inlet and exhaust valve. A computer unit computes a reference inlet pipe pressure and a reference fresh air ratio corresponding to a reference operating condition of the variable valve actuation arrangement (40) based on a detected operating condition of the internal combustion engine. A fresh air ratio correction value is derived from the detected and reference inlet pipe pressures and used to compute an operating parameter for a control object in the engine. Independent claims are also included for a control method for an internal combustion engine.
