A honeycomb filter for purifying exhaust gas, comprising a honeycomb structure (1) having a plurality of through holes, partitioned by a porous barrier wall, sealed alternately with an exhaust gas inflow side end face (2) and an exhaust gas outflow side end face (3). The honeycomb structure (1) has a slit (5) at least opening to the exhaust gas inflow side end face (2) wherein the slit (5) is partially filled with a filler (6) in the direction of exhaust gas channel (10) from the exhaust gas outflow side end face (3) at a depth 3-25 times the slit width (5d) and an air gap region (5e) is formed on the inside of the part filled with the filler (6). The honeycomb filter for purifying exhaust gas exhibits a high thermal shock resistance while sustaining high purification performance and it can be used continuously over a long term.
