1333083 Splicing webs AGFA GEVAERT NV 1 Jan 1971 [29 Jan 1970] 4374/70 Heading B8R A web butt splicing machine in which the progressing web 12 is joined by adhesive tape to a fresh web 11 after a small gap of 0À3 mm. has been induced between the webs following cutting thereof comprises a stationary clamp 16 and a movable clamp 15, the stationary clamp being provided with a fluid cylinder actuated butt splicing control bar 29 which co-operates with a groove 55 in the movable clamp 15 to effect the separation at the butt joint whilst the web 12 is clamped between the nip of rollers 61, 63 and suction nozzles 27, 28 in the clamping plate 26 of the clamp 16 and the web 11 is clamped by a compressor bar 35 having resilient rubber bosses extending therealong. In operation a splice inducing push-button causes a driven endless chain 68 to move the bar 67 carrying the fresh web 11 to the proximity of the shaft 72 whilst a fluid-actuated cylinder 64 pivots a roller 63 into contact with a roller 61 whose ends are braked by shoes 65 applied by fluid actuated cylinders 66. Subsequently fluid actuated cylinders (20, 21, Fig. 3) cause the movable clamp 15 to be displaced towards the clamp 16 whereupon the clamped webs 11, 12 are severed by a rotary cutter 33 which is traversed across the webs by a fluid cylinder assembly (42, Fig. 4). Next the clamp 15 is relaxed such that the start of web 11 may be removed whereupon the butt splicing control bar 29 is displaced to effect the separation of the webs which are then spliced by applying a pressure-sensitive tape from a roll 34 mounted on carriage and traversed across the web by a further fluid cylinder assembly (49, Fig. 4). The ends of the tape are then cut by knife blades 37 actuated by fluid cylinder 51, whereupon the brake shoes 65 are removed and the rollers 61, 63 are released for rotation and consolidation of the butt splice. |
