Hydroxyalkylmercaptans are prepared by reacting in a liquid phase an epoxide with hydrogen sulphide, in the presence of 0À01 to 10% by weight, based on the amount of epoxide of an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic and/or heterocyclic amine at a temperature of from -20‹ and 150‹ C., if desired under pressure. Epoxides with 8 to 24 carbon atoms, or mixtures thereof, are preferably used. Examples of these include: n-octene oxide-1,2, n-tetracosene oxide-1,2, n-octadiene-dioxide-1,2,7,8, 2- ethylhexene oxide-1,2, n-octene oxide-2,3, 9,10- epoxy-octadecanoic acid ester, 2-ethylhexylglycidyl ether, 2,3,-epoxy-octanol-4, and cyclododecene oxide. |
