Each plate cylinder (3) has a reference mark in the form of a groove making a reference mark on the cylinder circumference. Before loading the cylinder into the machine, the angle setting of groove relative fixed datum axis of the machine is recorded by camera (30) and evaluator (34). Once the cylinder is loaded, the starting point of the engraving line is established based on the groove start point so that the cylinders for any one color-printing set have an identical angle interval between reference point and engarving line start. The camera is focused on the cylinder (3) endface.
