A double-deck elevator includes a winch (6), an upper car (2), a lower car (3), a car support frame 1 supporting the upper and the lower car (2, 3), a car space adjusting device (4) capable of adjusting the space between the upper and the lower car (2, 3), and an emergency operation controller (12). When the car space adjusting device (4) is unable to operate normally, the emergency operation controller (12) operates the winch (6) to move the car support frame (1) such that the upper and the lower car (2, 3) are located sequentially at positions corresponding to adjacent floors, respectively.
