Carboxylic acid polymers with anti-hyper - cholesteraemic activity

Blood cholesterol levels in animals are lowered by oral administration of either a single carboxylic acid or anhydride polymer, or a copolymer of an unsaturated hydrocarbon and an unsaturated carboxylic acid, anhydride, aliphatic ester, aliphatic etheramide, dialkylaminoalkyl imide, or dialkylaminoalkyl alkylic ester. Dosage is 0.01-5.0% of daily food intake. Preparation of polymers is by known methods, such as reaction of an unsaturated hydrocarbon with an acid in presence of peroxides. Preferred compounds are ethylene maleic acid derivatives, particularly with lipophilic groups, in the molecular weight range 10,000-500,000.
