Metallic component comprises a protective layer containing aluminum and further elements and/or an aluminum alloy. A part of the aluminum, the further elements and/or the aluminum alloy is diffused into the material of the component. The protective layer has an aluminum-containing oxide layer. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of the metallic component comprising mixing particles of the aluminum, the further elements and/or the aluminum alloy with a liquid at room temperature, applying the mixture to the surfaces of the component and thermally post-treating the component. Preferred Features: The component is made from steel having a chromium content of up to 13 wt.%. The oxide layer is at least 2 mu m thick.
