[Also in Division B3] Aerofoil shaped components, e.g. compressor rotor blades, inlet and nozzle guide vanes, or struts of a gas turbine engine are formed of two wall members 16, 17 bonded to each other and to a honeycomb structure 18 disposed therebetween. As described, titanium wall members 16, 17 of a rotor blade are electron beam welded to parts 20, 21 of a root portion 22, which may be straight or curved to follow the blade profile. The joint at the leading edge 24 where the wall members 16, 17 are thicker, than the main portion of the wall is disposed on the convex side of the blade and has a coating of polyurethane resin reinforced by titanium wire gauze. The honeycomb structure 18 which is formed of aluminium, aluminium alloy, titanium, titanium alloy or fibre reinforced synthetic resin, may be stretched in a non uniform manner to form portions of different densities. Alternatively, the structure 18 may be comprised of two contacting or spaced apart portions (26, 27) Fig. 4 (not shown), the former of which is of thicker gauge and/or of smaller cell size than the latter. |
