PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a coating film with a pearl-like luster by which a coating film wherein a boundary part of change in shade between a highlight part being at right angles in the direction of an incident light and a shade part being inclined in the direction of the incident light is gradually changed by being accompanied with tinting of a chromatic color, and a shade of chromatic color resin fine particles is visible a the shade part, and on the other hand, shads of an interference color of an interference pigment and a composite color of the chromatic color resin fine particles are visible at the highlight part and a two-tone design with different shades at the shade part and at the highlight part (chromatic color two-tone pearl-like luster) is exhibited and can be obtained, and a coating article obtained by this method. SOLUTION: The method for forming the coating film with the pearl-like luster in which, after a color base coating layer is formed on a base material, an interference clear coat layer containing the interference pigment is formed on the color base coating layer, and in addition, a matte top clear coating layer containing the chromatic color resin fine particles being not the same color as the interference color of the interference pigment as a mating agent is formed thereon, is provided.
