A toy comprises a figure 13 seated on a vehicle and containing a drive mechanism which produces movement of the legs of the figure, thereby operating pedals which drive the toy. The figure contains a battery driven electric motor 26 having a drive shaft 29 and worm 30, by means of which a vertical shaft bearing is operated via a gear 31. Matching cam lobes 36, 37 are secured to the portion 35 of the shaft 32. Crank arms 42, 43 carry pairs of cam followers, crank arm 42 being associated with cam followers 38, 39, and are fixedly mounted on a crank shaft 48. Each crank arm drives a leg of the figure up and down. The head of the figure is moved from side to side by means of the movement of a vertical rod, the horizontal portion 49 of which is attached to crank arm 43 by a bracket 50. The legs of the figure are pivoted at the knee and are moved up and down alternately. Each foot is attached to a pedal of the vehicle, the pedals being fixed on axles 98, 103. Up and down movement of the pedals drives forward the wheel 65 which is supported on an axle 62, by means of a ratchet and pawl arrangement. The pedal support member 96 is attached to a disc 79 which has extending from it a disc 85 on which is pivotally mounted a pawl 89. When the pedal is moved downwards the pawl end is held in connection with the ratchet wheel 75 by a biassing spring 92, driving the vehicle forwards. At the same time, the pawl end 78 of the other pedal, which is being raised, is disconnected from the ratchet wheel 74. In a modification, the vehicle comprises a wheeled hobby horse, which is driven along the ground by direct engagement between the ground and the ball portion of the feet of the figure. |
