Conventional carton trays for the packaging of, for example, food products, suffer the drawback that the join between the lid and the package is not liquid and gas tight.Such conventional trays can, therefore, not be used for the packing of food products containing liquid, or items which have to be stored in a protective gas.The reason for this is that expanding spores (3) develop during the production of the carton which function as capillary tubes between the lid and the carton, even when the lid is welded onto the carton.In order to remove these spores (3), the carton (1), according to the invention is brought to a press (5, 6), where the rim section (2) is subjected to a ton weight pressing with a heat process, so that the surface (9) on the rim section (2) becomes completely seamless.A lid (10), which is subsequently welded fast, will now be able to seal the package which can now be used for food products containing liquid, and for foodstuffs which must be kept in a protective atmosphere.<IMAGE>
