Apparatus for intermittently feeding elongated workpieces 1, 2 &c. to a punch, shear, drilling machine &c. 4 includes a first pair of rollers 7, 8 upstream of the punch 4, the roller 7 being motor driven and the roller 8 being a pressure roller, a second pair of rollers 71, 81 downstream of the punch 4, a measuring roller which may, as shown, be constituted by the pressure roller 8 and which drives measuring means comprising an apertured disc 13, lamp 14 and a photo-electric cell 15 and a known counter e.g. an electronic counter (not shown). Signals from the counter are compared with the desired frequency of e.g. punching along the workpiece and stop the drive to the roller 7, actuate the punch 4 and restart the drive. A brake 11 is mounted on the motor shaft. A microswitch 19 detects the passage of the end of the workpiece 1 and actuates the motor of the downstream pair of rollers to receive the workpiece. If a shearing operation is being carried out at 4 the minimum length of the trailing cut-off end of the workpiece is the distance between the two pairs of rollers. Instead of a motor and a measuring device being associated with each pair of rollers a single motor may drive a worm engaging worm wheels on shafts of both driven rollers 7, 71, pinions on those shafts engaging pinions on the shafts of rollers 8, 81. A brake and a measuring device 13-15 are mounted on the input shaft of the motor. Alternatively a single motor drives both rollers 7, 71 through a worm arrangement and the shafts of rollers 8, 81 either each carry a measuring device 13-15 or carry worm wheels engaging a worm with which is associated a single measuring device 13-15. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6, the measuring rollers are distinct from the upstream and downstream roller pairs, each measuring roller 8, 81 being associated with a measuring device 13-15 and with a pair of rollers 7, 7a or 71, 7b respectively driven by motors 101, 10.
