PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic tape having small amounts of PES(positioning error standard deviation) and off-track, and good servo characteristics, and a magnetic tape cartridge. SOLUTION: In a magnetic tape 3 having a servo signal for tracking control recorded in a magnetic or back coat layer, used at a tape traveling speed of 4 m/sec., and having a recording track width of 21μm or lower, when a tape traveling speed is V [mm/sec.], an edge weave amount of a cycle f [mm] present in a tape edge 3a or its opposite tape edge 3a isα[μm] and a recording track width is W [μm], (α/W)×(V/f) is set <=10 [s<-1> ] and/orα/W is set to <=0.1.
