PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating type magnetic recording medium which is nearly free from protrusions, as a result nearly free from dropout and thermal asperity and can be applied to an MR head. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium 11 is characterized in that the defect occurrence frequency is reduced to 1/3 or below compared with the frequency when annealing treatment is not performed by performing the annealing treatment.
