PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new video on demand system in which desired contents are easily retrieved by inputting a free keyword. SOLUTION: In this video on demand system consisting of a video on demand server 103 storing a plurality of video contents, a settop box 102 that is connected to a network 106 and is provided to access the video contents stored in the video on demand server 103 and read an accessed video and a television receiver 101 connected to the settop box 102, the characteristics of the plurality of contents stored in the video on demand server are stored in a format defined by an MPEG 7, and the network 106 is provided with a retrieval server 107 for retrieving description information 109 of the contents stored in the video on demand server 103.
