A pipe-line sphere launcher or receiver comprises a section of pipe-line 4, 5 for incorporating into the main line, an elongated body 1, 2 intersecting the pipe-line 4, 5, to one side of the intersection a valve seat 7 which receives a movable valve member 9 carrying a launching cage 12, means 15 for introducing a sphere into cage 12 when the valve 9 is seated, and means 10, 13 for moving the cage 12 adjacent the pipe-line 4, 5. A valved by-pass pipe (not shown) connects the cage loading chamber 15 to the main line upstream of the launcher. When the by-pass valve is closed spheres are introduced into the chamber 15, and the valve 9 held closed by pressure from the pipe-line. When the by-pass valve is opened, the pressures on valve member 9 equalize, and its movement by one or both rods 10, 13 allows fluid flow through the seat 7 to move a sphere into the cage 12. The sphere is swept from the cage when adjacent the pipe-line 4, 5. Reverse operation is used for a sphere receiver.</p> |
