PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, capable of reading an original image, making it conform to a plurality of modes, concerning the image quality. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a light source 8 for irradiating a sheet-like original 9 with a light and a photoelectric converting element 6 for converting a light Lr reflected on a surface 9a of the original 9 on the side of the light source to an image signal. A light quantity control means is provided for setting the quantity of light of the light source 8 to a first range with a level, with which the photoelectric converting element 6 is saturated, as the reference in a first read mode and for setting the quantity of light of the light source 8 to a second range which is lower than the first range in a second read mode.
