PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader, which can be constituted compact in size, by facilitating the control of an optical system or optical path setting, and suppressing effectively the height of the optical system. SOLUTION: In the image reader for reading an original image by using an optical magnifying system having a first carriage and a second carriage, a mirror 33 of the first carriage is composed of a half mirror having polarizing characteristics.
